The details that come up with new construction and additions can become complicated rather quickly: planning, permits, blueprints, engineering, zoning, budgets, running new electric, water, or sewer lines... and so on. 

And, in a rising trend, due to the rising cost of housing in California, state legislation is making it easier to convert garages and other like units into rental properties, or ADUs (Additional Dwelling Units). This provides housing solutions while adding to the equity of one's property. ADUs can also be used as in-law dwellings which supports a cohesive and  (hopefully) sustaining family.

Remodeling is usually a big decision that is costly and involves many elements and half as many surprises. And the results change the space that you occupy regularly. The decision to remodel, improve or upgrade usually coincides with other symbolic change that is occuring at the time as well.
